Starting a new job is an exciting and nerve-wracking time. With a new boss to please and an office full of new colleagues to get to know, there’s plenty to consider if you want to make a success of your career. If you’re unsure how to approach this new beginning, follow these simple tips.
- Know your way. When you start your new job, you’ll want to be fully focused on your work, not on finding your way around the building. Ask for a tour of the office before you begin so you know where everything is, where the Locker is if you need to put your possessions away during the day, and how to find all of the relevant places that apply to your job. Don’t be afraid to ask plenty of questions – everyone was new once, and getting lost will just waste time.
- Do your preparation. It’s always best to show up on your first day fully prepared for whatever might be thrown your way. Do plenty of reading before you begin so you can feel confident that you understand your position and the industry fully. It may help to contact your manager to ask if there’s any relevant preparation they feel you should do – showing initiative will make a great first impression.
- Stay calm. It’s natural to suffer from first day nerves when you start a new job, but try not to let those jitters get in the way of your initial performance. Stay calm through simple breathing exercises and practice positive thinking before the big day to ensure that you’re feeling as relaxed and confident as possible. If you still feel like a ball of anxiety, use the fake it ‘til you make it technique to make sure nobody sees your nerves.
- Make connections. It can feel daunting to be surrounded by colleagues who already know each other, but there’s no reason to believe that they won’t be happy to welcome you into the circle. Ask to tag along to coffee or a meal during your lunch break so you have a proper chance to connect with the people you’ll be working closely alongside.
- Stay focused. Throughout the interview process, you probably made an effort to sell yourself as a valuable asset to the company. This is your chance to prove yourself, so aim to make an impact from the start. While you will inevitably need some time to settle in, it’s important to focus on your work from day one so that your employer can see that they made the right decision in hiring you.
- Keep track of your achievements. Once you start scoring substantial achievements in your new position, take note of all of the successes. Even seemingly minor moments of success could contribute to your application for a promotion or pay rise. Keep a file of all of your positive feedback and successful sales so you can prove your worth when necessary.
- Don’t be afraid to chime in. When you’re the newest member of the team, it can feel difficult to speak up in meeting. Try to make yourself heard from the early days of your time at the job, even if that means making small suggestions or asking for feedback from a colleague.
