BB Pellets. Choosing the Right Type.

The pellet gun redefined a new era back in the 1500’s, and opened a way for new technologies around pneumatic gun weaponry and particularly, its ammunition to grow.

BB pellets are traditionally known as steel projectiles that are coated with metals such as zinc or copper. In recent times they now include various options such as fluorescence and even biodegradability. With more to choose from in the twenty first century, how should one go about choosing the perfect pellets?

Here are a few suggestions.

Choosing the best BB pellets

First it is paramount to consider what the ammunition is being used for. This includes, and is not limited to the following categories:

  • Hunting
  • Competitive Shooting
  • General Target Shooting
  • Informal Shooting/Plinking

Having decided the use, it become easier to choose the pellets as their physical characteristics will be geared towards certain purposes. These characteristics are:

Head design

  • Hollow
  • Pointed
  • Round/Domed
  • Flat/Wadcutter

For hunting all pellets can be used, but the hollow design is least favoured. The round pellet is best for long distances, while the hollow pellet is better for short distances. The pointed head is best known for its penetrating capabilities.

The flat pellets are best for target and competitive shooting. Like the round pellet, it is also used in “plinking”.

It is also necessary to bear in mind three elements when choosing pellets:

  • Accuracy
  • Speed
  • Consistency

Hunting focuses mostly on accuracy. For target, and competitive shooting all three elements are important, however, consistency may slightly take precedence. Informal shooters may or may not consider these elements since diversion is the main priority.

For many persons choosing the right type of pellets can either help or hinder performances in the aforementioned listed categories as well as on a business level. Be this as it many, what is certain is that BB pellets will continue their evolution in the generations to come.
